Our new 'Star'

We decided that we needed a little more room on some of our trips so Philip went shopping. After lots of searching and looking at rigs of all sizes and types we found Star. Star is a 30' Trek Pathmaker. It has the Electo-Majic bed that slides up into the ceiling so there is plenty of room inside. Now parking at Walmart will be easy. No worries if it rains. We actually have some room to move around.
We spent a week in Palm Springs to work on the rig.
And for our VW friends - it is still a split window.

Up the mountain from Redding
Philip's brother moved up to northern California, sorry NorthState, in the hills above Redding. They have a view of both Lassen and Shasta from their deck. It was nice to relax and be able to play. Philip drove the new tractor, helping his brother grade a road.
Catherine helped figure out the electric gate.
And we took a little time to explore the land. Here we were looking for thermal activity. This is volcano country.

Family Reunion - Hayward California
Had a little time so we headed Cath's folks for a family gathering. Oh the stories we hear about when they were kids.

Hot August Nights - Reno Nevada
Put nearly 10000 pre-1972 cars (mostly hotrods) in the Biggest Little City along with several acres of swap meet, concerts, and cruises all over and you have an idea of the Hot Augst Nights week. We spent most of our time at the swap meet where we camped with the RVers but managed to get into town to check out the cruises with Philip's brother Rick and his wife Katy.

Our VW friend Fred and his mustang buddy Don spent time with us. We also stopped at a VW Rallyon Saturday. We stayed at the check in point and watched the VWs come and go.

Little Miss Sunshine

So where else do you have the premier of a movie that features a VW bus as a principle character? At a drive-in of course and you invite all the buses to get in free. It was quite a line up to see Little Miss Sunshine. The biggest obstical was the use of radio for the sound broadcast. So they asked everyone with a radio to turn theirs up so the people next door could hear. Ended up with many of the folks in chairs in front of the buses. Nice little party. It is fun to watch a movie with everyone cheering for the bus.

Camp out in Ventura, California

In the midst of working we got a call from Quillen who said lets go camping. We joined another VW friend and some of their regular camping cohort. We played a round of All Terrain golf with the founders of ATPGA (all terrain professional Golf Association). Makes for an interesting afternoon. Here Quillen showed off her hub cap from the front of her VW bus. It had been dented when a truck backed into her bus the day before.

OCTO - Long Beach, California
A little side trip to the OCTO VW bus show. It was nice to take a little time to play.
Philip found a new toy to add to the yard ornament collection. Besides it made a great seat for the raffle.

Palm Springs, California
A week off in Palm Springs would have been great except for the average temperature of 110 deg. Glad they had a great pool and air conditioning.

Ghia Treffen - Ventura, CA
We took a couple hours to check out the Ghia meet. That is our red Ghia. It was a fun show.

Clean up time for the show and this young man was making a good job of it.

Ventura, California
As with all things in life there is change. With a family emergency we find ourselves committed to caring for Philip's parents for the present. We will be staying in Ventura for a while. We wish that we could be sending you pictures from adventures and far off places but we will have to be content with local views and daily life. Maybe it is just time for us to slow down and spend some time looking around us.

Big 3 Swap Meet, San Diego, CA
The weather was holding so we decided to head south to San Diego, CA for the Big 3 Swap meet. This is an annual event in the Qualcom Stadium (where the Chargers football team plays) that covers about half of the parking lot. There are lots of parts to search through. We spent three days wandering the grounds from dawn to dusk. We definately came home with lots of parts.
